The Learning Design & ESD Bootcamp provides a flexible 8 week programme for academics, learning designers, educational developers/curriculum designers. The Bootcamp does not only support the development of curriculum design for online and blended learning delivery but also in guiding and supporting the teams in the design and implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in their curriculums supported by the CoDesignS ESD Toolkit. The teams will design curriculum elements contributing to embedding ESD in educational practices in a module of their choice.
A team requires at least one academic/teacher and one learning designer/curriculum designer or educational developer. The teams will be supported by mentors in the design, development and co-creation of curriculum elements contributing to embedding ESD in a new or existing module using the CoDesigns ESD Toolkit.
After completing the Bootcamp you can apply to become a Certified Bootcamp Mentor or Certified CoDesignS ESD Trainer by successfully completing our Learning Design and ESD Portfolio.
Our Learning Design and ESD Bootcamp is proudly delivered in collaboration with UNESCO IESALC, the American University of Sharjah, Anglia Ruskin University, Glasgow University and the Open University.

What would the Bootcamp cover?
The Learning Design and ESD Bootcamp is an innovative activity that aims to inspire and empower learning designers, academics, curriculum designers and educational developers from different disciplines to acquire a learning design mind-set focused on the implementation of ESD competences.
The selected participants will be registered on the Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development Online course hosted by UNESCO IESALC Campus.
By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Discuss the concept of sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Explain what ESD is and the difference it can make to curricula and pedagogy.
- Discuss the concept of transformative pedagogies and the application of active learning methodology into learning and teaching practice.
- Describe learning design concepts and approaches as well as the importance of the three pillars of the CoDesignS Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Framework embedding ESD in curriculum design.
- Design curriculum elements contributing to embedding ESD in educational practices using the CoDesignS ESD Toolkit Planner.
Phase I: Training
The course will be delivered over a period of 6 weeks at the beginning of the Bootcamp covering 24 notional learning hours. The course is delivered online and provides a mix of the following activities: micro lectures, readings, discussions, quizzes, reflections, application of the CoDesignS ESD Toolkit and Webinars.
Phase II: Design and Development
The teams will continue their design and development process with the support of their mentors, through collaborative work sessions. Mentors will host a webinar with their teams every two weeks to follow up on their progress.
Phase III: Pitch
At the end of the Bootcamp, the teams will attend a closing day in which they will present the designs related to the module/programme they worked on supported by the CoDesignS ESD Toolkit Planner. At least one member of each team will have to commit to being available to present their designs during the final event.
The teams’ presentations will be evaluated by a panel of experts. At the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate of completion issues by UNESCO IESALC and certified by the Association for Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development and UNESCO IESALC.

Who should attend?
The Learning Design and ESD Bootcamp is aimed at professionals with at least 4 years experience in the areas of sustainability, education for sustainable development, curriculum design, learning design and/or educational technology. A team requires at least one academic/teacher and one learning designer/curriculum designer or educational developer.
How long is the Bootcamp?
The Bootcamp is delivered online over a period of 8 weeks. The participants are expected to spend approximately 7 hours a week engaging with the Bootcamp activities.
What will you receive at the end of the Bootcamp?
At the end of the Bootcamp, the participants will receive a certificate of completion issued by UNESCO IESALC and certified by the Association for Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development and UNESCO IESALC.
Fees and funding
|Fees: £3750 per team|
You will be required to pay in full once you have received your offer letter and this will contain full instructions on how to make the payment. Please contact us if you’re interested in registering several teams from the same institution to apply for an institution discount.
Participants from low income economies and lower-middle income economies receive 20% discount.
